Sindy Wang, with her doctoral degree tutor, are going to publish a new paper relevant to Northwest China’s arid area. This paper, Regional Landscape Architecture Strategies in Multi-layers in Response to Rapid Urbanization in Arid Area of Loess Plateau, is going to be presented by Sindy on Feb 11th during the IACP session of Western Regional Science Association’s 2012 annual meeting in Kauai, Hawaii.
Loess Plateau, located in vast northwest China, was the cradle of brilliant Chinese Culture. However, due to the unreasonable usage and aggressive development of water and soil source, nowadays, Loess Plateau is suffering from vegetation destruction, water scarcity, low income levels in households, and poor living environment, especially in its arid area. With the globalization and urbanization developing rigorously in recent years, human settlement construction in arid area of Loess Plateau gradually moved into a new stage. In terms of greening and water catchment, adjustment of industry structure, and town planning, the human settlement in this area does have certain improvement; but some problems still remain from the view of landscape architecture in regional and urban planning, such as demolition of landscape environment, soil erosion, lack of humanity and regional spirit, and so on. In this article, based in the theory of Landscape Ecological Settlementalism and the principle of making best of advantages and avoiding weakness, the author proposes strategies from landscape architecture view in macro (region scale), medium (town and county scale), and micro (village scale) layers. Based on the regional geomorphology, local culture respecting, landscape features analysis, an interactive three-dimensional space will be generated to build water green ecological networks, and a reasonable landscape planning system will be presented, using biological methods, engineering techniques and aesthetic means to improve their living conditions and methods of landscape planning technology. |
